Standing at the railing at Table Rock on the Canadian side, with Horseshoe Falls thundering just feet away, mist soaking your jacket in seconds — that's the Niagara Falls most people picture.
The reality is there are two countries, two sets of attractions, and two very different experiences happening simultaneously on each bank of the Niagara River.
Canadian vs. American Side
The Canadian side offers the better panoramic view. Horseshoe Falls dominates from this angle, and the Fallsview area gives you an elevated perspective over the entire horseshoe shape. The American side, meanwhile, puts you right up against the falls — the Cave of the Winds attraction at Goat Island literally places you in the spray zone. Both are worth doing if you have two full days. If you can only pick one for photos, go Canadian. If you want the most intense physical experience, go American.
Getting There & Getting Around
Fly into Buffalo Niagara International Airport (roughly 30 miles from the falls) or Toronto Pearson (about 78 miles). From Buffalo, taxis to the Canadian side run around $95 flat rate for up to four people. The WEGO bus system on the Canadian side connects all major attractions for around $7/day for adults. Note: crossing into Canada requires a valid passport. The Canadian side is fairly walkable once you're there — Horseshoe Falls, the Skylon Tower, and Clifton Hill entertainment district are all close together.
What to Pay For
Niagara Falls State Park (American side) and Queen Victoria Park (Canadian side) are both free to enter. You only pay for specific attractions. The Maid of the Mist boat tour (American side) runs about $32 per person and departs mid-April through November. Hornblower/Niagara City Cruises (Canadian equivalent) costs around CAD $35. The Skylon Tower observation deck is about CAD $18. Cave of the Winds on the American side costs around $21.
Where to Sleep
Fallsview hotels on the Canadian side offer rooms with direct views of the falls — the Marriott Fallsview and Sheraton on the Falls are popular, with rates from $200–$450/night depending on season. Budget alternatives exist further from the rim from $90–$150/night. Book summer weekends two to three months out — Fallsview rooms sell out fast for July weekends.
