Castle Above Annecy

· Travel team
Lykkers, the best way to experience Lake Annecy and Château de Menthon-Saint-Bernard is not to rush from Annecy Old Town, photograph the castle, and return immediately.
The castle stands about 10 km from Annecy, above the lakeside village of Menthon-Saint-Bernard, so the strongest plan combines three layers: the lake in the morning, the castle after opening time, and the village shoreline in late afternoon.
Choose the Right Transport
Your main decision is whether to stay in Annecy or Menthon-Saint-Bernard and whether to travel by bus, bicycle, or car. For a first visit, Annecy is the more practical base because you get broader transport and dining choices.
Stay Two Nights in Annecy
A 2-night stay is the strongest minimum plan. Use your arrival day for Annecy Old Town and the northern lakeshore, then reserve the next full day for Menthon-Saint-Bernard.
A practical structure is:
Day 1 afternoon — arrive in Annecy, check in, and explore the Old Town and lakeside.
Day 2 morning — travel toward Menthon-Saint-Bernard and spend time beside the lake.
Day 2 afternoon — visit Château de Menthon-Saint-Bernard during its opening period.
Day 2 late afternoon — return to the village or lake before heading back to Annecy.
Day 3 — continue your journey after breakfast or use the morning for a second short lakeside walk.
One night is possible, but only if you arrive in Annecy before midday. The castle does not open every day throughout its entire season, so a poorly chosen weekday can ruin a castle-focused plan.
Check the 2026 Castle Calendar Carefully
This is the most important planning detail.
In 2026, Château de Menthon-Saint-Bernard opens from April 1 to November 12, but opening days vary by season. During much of April, May, June, September, October, and early November, regular opening is limited mainly to Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., with final admission at 5:30 p.m. Special vacation periods have additional daily opening dates.
From July through August and until September 6, the published 2026 schedule lists daily opening from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., with final admission at 6:30 p.m.
The standard full admission price is €12 from age 15, while the reduced rate is €6 for visitors aged 5 to 14 and eligible reduced-rate visitors. Gardens and terraces alone cost €3 from age 5. Tickets are sold on site, with no advance ticket sales according to the castle information.
For two visitors aged 15 or older, budget €24 for the standard castle visit.
The regular guided visit lasts about 45 minutes, and departures are generally organized every 20 or 30 minutes depending on visitor volume. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours for the entire castle stop, including waiting, the guided interior visit, and time in the gardens and terraces.
Bus, Bicycle, or Car
Choose the bus if you want the simplest low-stress day. Current route planning information places Annecy to Menthon-Saint-Bernard at roughly 18 to 20 minutes by direct bus under normal timetable conditions, with an indicative single fare around €2 to €3. Exact schedules should be checked for your travel date.
Choose a bicycle if you are comfortable with a longer active day. The complete official Lake Annecy cycling route is approximately 40 km with 300 m of elevation gain and is rated medium difficulty.
Do not combine the full 40 km circuit with a relaxed castle visit unless you are already a confident cyclist. If your priority is the castle and village, cycle only the section you actually need and leave enough time for the uphill connection toward the castle.
Build the Day Around Opening Time
The smartest itinerary changes with the season. In July and August, you can visit the castle in the morning. In spring and autumn, when regular opening begins at 1:00 p.m. on applicable dates, use the morning for the lake and village first.
Follow This Spring or Autumn Schedule
For an applicable castle opening day outside high summer, use this structure:
8:00 a.m. — breakfast in Annecy.
9:00 a.m. — leave for Menthon-Saint-Bernard.
9:30 to 11:30 a.m. — walk beside the lake and explore the village area.
11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. — early lunch.
12:30 p.m. — begin moving toward the castle.
1:00 to 3:00 p.m. — castle visit, including waiting and garden time.
3:00 to 4:00 p.m. — return toward the lake.
4:00 to 6:00 p.m. — relaxed shoreline time.
After 6:00 p.m. — return to Annecy for dinner.
This schedule avoids standing outside the castle before it opens and keeps the better morning hours for the lake.
Do Not Underestimate the Castle Interior
The castle visit is not suitable for everyone. The official visitor information states that the interior contains numerous steps and staircases and is not accessible to visitors with reduced mobility. The site also does not have suitable toilet facilities for disabled visitors.
If anyone in your group has serious difficulty with stairs, choose the gardens and terraces option only after confirming current access conditions with staff.
Animals are not permitted anywhere on the site, including outdoor areas, and picnics are not accepted on the castle grounds.
That means your lunch should happen before entering. Do not arrive at 1:00 p.m. carrying a full picnic and expect to eat it inside the estate.
Set a Clear Daily Budget
For one traveler making an independent day trip from Annecy, prepare approximately €45 to €100 before accommodation.
A simple bus-based day can remain near the lower end: roughly €4 to €6 for return transport based on indicative single fares, €12 for standard castle admission, and around €25 to €50 for lunch, drinks, and a simple evening meal.
For two travelers, approximately €100 to €180 is a comfortable planning range for transport, two standard castle admissions, lunch, and ordinary daily expenses. A rental car, premium dining, or bicycle hire increases the total.
Carry 1 liter of water per person for a mild-weather day and 1.5 liters in hot summer conditions. Bring comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, a light rain layer, and a small power bank.
The best version of this trip has a simple order: lake first, lunch before entry, castle during the correct opening window, then back to the water for the softer late-afternoon light.
