If we are planning a trip around Salzburg, Hohenwerfen Castle is an easy place to add to our route. The fortress rises above Werfen on a rocky ridge about 155 meters above the Salzach Valley.
Built between 1075 and 1078, it combines medieval architecture, mountain scenery, historic rooms, exhibitions, and bird-of-prey presentations.
We can plan around 2–3 hours for the main visit. If we add lunch and time for photographs, a half-day works even better.

Ticket Prices

Here is a practical price guide for a visit:
- Adults with lift: about $24
- Adults using the walking route: about $20
- Children aged 6–14 with lift: about $10
- Children aged 6–14 walking: about $7
- Children under 6: generally free
The admission includes the guided castle tour, museums, exhibitions, and bird-of-prey presentation. Prices are approximate dollar conversions from published euro rates, so the final amount can change with exchange rates.
The lift ticket is convenient if we want to save energy. The walking option suits us if we enjoy an uphill route.

Opening Hours

Hohenwerfen Castle follows a seasonal schedule.
- April, October, November: about 9:30 AM–4:00 PM
- May–September: about 9:00 AM–5:00 PM
- Peak summer period: about 9:00 AM–6:00 PM
Some Mondays outside the busiest period are closed, apart from public holidays. We should check the latest daily schedule before traveling.
The interior is explored through a guided tour lasting around 50 minutes. The route includes about 300 steps, so comfortable shoes are helpful.

Bird Presentation

The bird-of-prey presentation is one of the highlights of our visit. During most of the operating period, presentations are scheduled around 11:15 AM and 3:15 PM.
During the busiest summer period, an additional session is generally offered at 2:15 PM. Each presentation takes about 25 minutes and can be affected by weather.
If we want a relaxed schedule, we can arrive around 10:30 AM, explore the grounds, join the guided tour, and then attend the late-morning presentation.

Transportation Costs

From Salzburg to Werfen, we can take a train in roughly 40–55 minutes, with fares often around $12–$25, depending on the service and ticket type.
By car, the journey takes roughly 40–45 minutes under normal conditions. Parking is available near the castle ticket area and is generally free.
From Werfen railway station, we can walk toward the castle in about 30 minutes. A local taxi or shuttle can cost roughly $10–$20, depending on the service and timing.
We cannot drive directly to the fortress entrance. From the lower area, we can walk uphill or use the available lift.

Accommodation Prices

If we stay overnight, Werfen gives us a convenient base. Typical prices are approximately:
- Budget guesthouses: $80–$120 per night
- Mid-range hotels: $120–$200
- Comfortable mountain hotels: $200–$300+
Rates depend on the date, room type, and availability. Staying outside the village center can sometimes reduce the cost.

Dining Costs

We can eat at the castle tavern during opening hours or return to Werfen for more choices.
- Coffee and a sweet: $4–$8
- Soup or light meal: $8–$15
- Main dish: $15–$30
- Restaurant meal: $25–$40
- Lunch for two: around $35–$60
The castle tavern is convenient when we want to continue sightseeing without leaving the site.

Best Time To Visit

April through June offers fresh green scenery and generally calmer conditions. July and August provide longer opening hours and more presentation times but can attract more visitors.
September and October are also appealing for mountain views and colorful landscapes. For photography, early morning and late afternoon can provide softer light.

Useful Travel Tips

- We should wear comfortable shoes because the historic route contains many steps. A lift ticket can make the uphill journey easier.
- We should also check the guided-tour and bird-presentation schedules before arriving. Mountain weather can change quickly, so carrying a light outer layer is useful.
- Allowing 2–3 hours for the fortress gives us enough time to explore without rushing. If we want lunch and additional photographs, we can set aside around four hours.

Our Final View

Hohenwerfen Castle gives us a practical half-day adventure with history, mountain scenery, guided exploration, and a memorable bird presentation. With around $20–$24 for admission, $12–$25 for transport from Salzburg, $15–$30 for a meal, and $80–$200 for a room, we can prepare a realistic budget before leaving.
Lykkers, if we had one perfect moment here, would we choose the view from the fortress walls or the sight of birds flying above the historic towers?
