Făgăraș Castle, known locally as Cetatea Făgărașului, is one of the most impressive medieval fortresses in the Transylvania region of Romania. Located in the center of Făgăraș, the castle has more than 600 years of history and has served different roles over the centuries.
For us, the attraction is not only the massive stone structure. We can walk around the water-filled moat, enter the inner courtyard, explore museum rooms, and learn how the fortress changed from a defensive stronghold into a cultural attraction.

Getting To The Castle

- From Făgăraș Railway Station to the castle: walking is free and takes about 15–20 minutes
- Local taxi: around $3–$8 for a short ride within town
- Local bus: approximately $1–$2 per trip
- Parking near the town center: around $2–$5 when a paid area applies
For us, arriving by train is a practical choice because the station is within walking distance of the fortress. If we are carrying luggage or traveling with family, taking a short taxi ride can save walking time.

Exploring The Fortress

The castle has a rectangular layout surrounded by a large moat. Water from the Olt River system helped supply the defensive ditch, creating a strong barrier around the fortress.
Four corner towers and thick outer walls give the complex its powerful appearance. The Red Tower is one of the most recognizable sections and provides a good viewpoint over the surrounding town.
As we walk through the site, we can notice how the structure combines defensive features with spaces designed for residence and administration. This mixture helps us understand why the fortress remained important for so many generations.

Museum And Historical Collections

Today, Făgăraș Castle houses the Museum of the Land of Făgăraș. Its collections cover local history, archaeology, medieval art, and traditional culture.
Inside, we can see historical objects and displays that help explain the development of the region. Instead of simply looking at old walls, we can connect the architecture with the people, traditions, and events that shaped the area.
We should allow around 1.5–2 hours for the main castle and museum. History enthusiasts may prefer 3 hours for a slower visit.
